Wandering girl

Out with the old in 2025

This is the start of something new, so as I get my bearings on how to use this website- please be patient with me.

I am wanting to use this platform instead of Facebook to keep my family and friends updated on what’s going on in my life.

My name is Amy, I just turned 33 years old and I live in Perth, Western Australia. I’m working in a gold mine and I’m a dump truck operator.

I’ve been doing this job for the last 12 months and although I enjoyed it early on from a change from cleaning, I no longer enjoy it, in fact- I’m pretty miserable. Before becoming an operator, I was a cleaner for 2 and a half years. So, for 3 and a half years I have been doing FIFO on a 2 week on 1 week off roster. FIFO means fly in fly out, so I take a plane to work instead of just driving like everyone else. Don’t get me wrong – there are pros to the job. But it also comes with a heck of a lot of cons.

I have a 5 year old horse and a 10 year old dog, and they are both struggling with me constantly not being home. I mean, when you think about it, I’m home for only 1/4 of the year and that certainly takes a toll on all of my relationships and friendships.

Its a lonely, isolating place working on a mine site. I’m in a cab of a truck for 12 hours a day and don’t really socially interact with many people during my shift. That is a lot of time to be swimming in my own thoughts- and most of them are not nice at all.

But I recently acquired a job, in NSW that I know will definitely suit me much better. It will be better for not only me, but for my animals and our relationships. So join me on my journey in 2025 as I go from dump truck operator, to Equine Vet Nurse. The ups and downs of life and the journey across Australia is going to be an interesting one.
